The PPS, which stands for “Pistolet-pulemyot Sudayeva” or “Sudayev’s submachine-gun,” is a series of Soviet submachine guns designed for the 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge. These firearms are automatic and fire from an open bolt. They have a cyclic rate of around 600 rounds per minute. Alexei Sudayev developed the PPS with the intention of creating an affordable personal defense weapon suitable for reconnaissance units, vehicle crews, and support service personnel. During World War II, the Red Army extensively employed the PPS and its variations. Subsequently, several countries in the former Warsaw Pact, as well as numerous African and Asian allies, adopted this firearm. Between 1946 and 1955, various Polish factories held licenses to manufacture the Pistolet Maszynowy wz.43, which closely resembled the PPS-43, including the original folding metal buttstock pattern from the Soviet design. The factory markings were located on the top of the receiver and consisted of a number within an oval.
