Description

**RARE *1st Type ‘A’ Series WW2 1941 RAF Transit Cased British Swift Training Rifle Company Limited Military Training Rifle With Wood Calibration Frame, Original Types 1,2 & 3 Targets & Photocopies Of Pages From An Original Swift User Manual. Sn 20672:28 - 20672:28

The Swift Training Rifle was a rifle shooting training device made in Great Britain during the Second World War. The first Swift training rifles were most evidently designed around the Pattern'14 ( Enfield No.3) Rifle. This rifle did not actually fire a cartridge, but shot out a forked probe that punctured a paper target barely an inch from the "muzzle". The system illustrated, to a recruit or trainee, the required sight picture and the correct hold of the rifle as well as the correct operation of the action, the finesse of trigger pull, and the importance of prevention of cant of the rifle. The Swift Training Rifle originally came with a stand that folded out in "Deck Chair" fashion, and onto which was clipped the paper target. The rifle was held at a constant distance from the target by a steel rod bridle hinged from the target frame and hooked into a sling-swivel-like fitting under the rifle's fore-end woodwork (we do not have the ‘deck chair’ frame). The targets were printed in a series of different images, each illustrating a particular training scenario (our example is complete with original types 1,2 and 3 targets and Photocopies Of Pages From An Original Swift User Manual describing how to use the device). The wood is undamaged. It has the correct prongs at the muzzle and sprung butt plate. The stock is mounted with brass plate bearing the Company name and address and ‘A series’ number ‘A/982’ (illustrated). The bolt action cocking & prong action at the muzzle functions correctly. The rifle has its original box muzzle cover. The original sturdy transit case has a hinged lip clasp fasteners and carry handles. The exterior of the case has original green paint and white stencilled stores codes as well as ‘RAF’ Royal Air Force mark. The inside of the case is fitted to hold the rifle securely & has its original illustrated swift trade label which has a diagram of the rifle, Swift’s company name Oxford address and 1941 date. The case contains its original "U" shaped plywood calibration frame. This frame screws onto the front of the rifle and would have a piece of plain paper taped to it to facilitate adjustment of relationship between the point of impact and the sight-line. The path of the needle-pin that punched the hole in the target could be adjusted by virtue of several screws bearing on the needle channel. These screws are located in the side of, and under, the fore-end below the hood. The price for this rare type Swift training rifle with original accessories includes UK delivery. NB This item is not classed as a firearm and no licence is required to own it in the UK. Sn 20672:28
