This sword is very similar to many other horse-mans or dragoons swords of the period and has an iron basket guard comprised of individual bars. (please see photos). Manufactured probably circa 1730-1750. The blade is 33 inches long, has been polished during its life and has the lettering ANDREA FERARA on both sides. The grip of wood and quite possibly replaced during its working life. The original wire binding missing. Overall length is 39 inches. This and various other similar types of horseman's or Dragoons basket hilt swords are known to have seen service in Europe during the Napoleonic wars 1795-1815, as well as during the American Revolutionary Wars circa 1775- 1783.
