A very rare naval cutlass with early style figure of 8 hand-guard and having an unusual solid brass grip. The front of iron hand guard is impressed with a large number 40. We have no idea what this number represents. The straight single edged steel blade approx 28 inches in length and un-marked. A very scarce naval weapon, this pattern was originally produced circa 1805. This type of cutlass is known to have been carried by the British at the battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic wars. Also similar to weapons carried in the USA during the war of 1812. Overall length 33 inches. Ribbed solid brass grips. No scabbard. Ref 3965.
