This is a rare Lewis machine gun magazine loading tool that was issued with the Lewis machine guns to enable the drum magazine to be reloaded. The tool is made of steel with a fine knurled top part of the handle with a square external key at the bottom for engaging with the centre of the magazine spring holder. The tool was inserted into the bottom of an inverted drum magazine and turned against the internal spring tension enabling rounds of ammunition to be fed into it.
