Create my profile now!The famous English gunsmiths John Manton (1752-1834) & Son, George Henry (1789-1854) worked at Dover Street Piccadilly London. Between C1833 to 1844 George Henry Manton went into partnership with the Gunsmith William Hudson. The partnership continued to trade under the name Manton & Son (see page 170 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This is a best quality John Manton & Son double barrel percussion sporting shotgun made at Manton’s Dover Street address C1800 then later C1820 converted by Manton & Son to percussion. It has 27” browned steel barrels set side by side. The barrels have a central flat top barrel rib & brass bead fore sight. The barrel rib is signed ‘John Manton & Son Dover Street’. The barrels smooth bores have just staining consistent with age. The under side of the barrels have proofs and are each numbered ‘8078’. It has its original polished walnut stock which has an attractive Tiger stripe effect & chequered grip panels. The top of the stock wrist has a void silver escutcheon. The trigger guard with extended tang, stock block tang, action plates & hammers have foliate decoration. The action plates are signed by the maker ‘John Manton & Son Patent’. The shotgun has its original ebony ramrod with brass end cap and tip which unscrews to reveal a worm. The weapon cocks & dry fires as it should. The weapon is contained in its original sturdy polished Walnut case with hinged lid. The case has a folding brass handle set into the lid, 2 hook fasteners and lock (key absent). The inside of the lid has a Manton trade label. Internally the case is fitted with compartments for the shotgun and accessories. The case is lined with felt and the exterior, rear of the case has an original period house removal transit label (illustrated). Accessories consist of 2 flasks, one leather with embossed hunting scene and sprung brass nozzle for shot and a brass Sykes (Sheffield) patent marked powder flask with sprung nozzle, an Eley labelled percussion cap tin which contains a small quantity of percussion caps, a 3 piece ebony cleaning rod with screw on cleaning brush tool, 2 ebony handled tools one with an oil reservoir and screw top lid with oil applicator tool, a nice steel nipple extractor tool with oil reservoir and screw top lid and oil applicator tool and 2 screw off brass caps which hold 2 spare nipples. A superb feature of this gun is that the case also contains its 2 original John Manton & Son Patent signed best quality Flintlocks original to this gun before conversion to percussion. The locks with original cocks & frizzen pans are clean with all of the correct intricate workmanship to be expected of a quality maker and are desirable in their own right. Both have crisp ‘John Manton & Son Patent’ signatures. The price for this best quality piece includes UK delivery. NB.
