Create my profile now!The Suffolk Regiment 1685-1959 was an infantry regiment of the British Army. Formed in 1685, the Suffolk Regiment was originally named the Duke of Norfolk's Regiment of Foot; between 1685 and 1751 it was named after its commanding officers. The British military County area abbreviation code for Norfolk & Suffolk is ‘N&S’ (see page 103 of Skennerton’s ‘The Broad Arrow’). Due to army reforms it was renamed the 12th Regiment of Foot (1751), and the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot (1782). In 1881 it was renamed The Suffolk Regiment. Elements of the Suffolk Regiment embarked for India in 1796 where it took part in operations against Tipu Sultan including the Siege of Seringapatam in April 1799 during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. They also took part in the Invasion of Île Bonaparte in July 1810 and the Invasion of Isle de France in November 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars. Elements of the Royal Norfolk Regiment saw action in the American Revolutionary War & The Napoleonic Wars. This is an original, Enfield Tower Brown Bess flintlock musket Regiment marked to the ‘1st Reg. N&SV'. It is 55” overall length with a 39” long round steel barrel with block foresight. The barrel has English black powder proof inspection marks. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age. Its lock plate is marked with Georgian King’s Crown above ‘GR’ (George Rex) together with inspection mark and ‘Tower’ across the tail. It has a military cock, Walnut full stock with, iron ramrod and regulation brass furniture. The butt plate tang is Regiment marked 'L. No.72 (most likely armoury weapon numbers) and ‘1st Reg. N&SV' (Norfolk & Suffolk Volunteers). The musket’s cocking and firing action works crisply. The musket’s sling swivels are fitted with buff leather sling. The Musket comes complete with an original period socket bayonet. The 17” triangular form blade has just light staining consistent with age. The blade has a maker signature ‘Weaver’ with small ‘WR’ inspection stamp & ordnance inspection mark. ‘VII’ is cut into the rim of the socket most likely a weapon number. The bayonet fits the musket. As is common the bayonet is without scabbard. The price for this historic piece includes UK delivery.
