Create my profile now!This is a rare WW1 German Machine gunners bayonet. Designed by Dr. Lucian Gottscho of Berlin and known as "The Machine-Gunner Bayonet" they were made in very limited numbers. Originally made for an export order these bayonets were diverted for WW1 German army in 1915 for use by Machine gunners. The rifles could be fitted to Gew 98 rifles (see page 115 and page 128 plate No.281 of The Bayonet Book by Watts & White). A period image of an Imperial German soldier armed with a Gew98 rifle fitted with a Gottscho S15 bayonet is illustrated in image 1. The bayonet has a clean 14 ½” long steel blade with fullers and is 19 ¾” overall length. The blade is marked ‘S’ ‘W’ & stylised ‘g’ within a bulb or bomb shape. inspection marks. The spine has an Imperial inspection mark. The fullered blade is 14 ½” long. The correct one piece wrap around 9 groove wood grip is undamaged and correctly secured by 2 screw bolts. It has the correct steel pommel with mortise slot and The original scabbard is blackened steel & has a few small dents to the rear consistent with service wear. There are no visible numbers on the bayonet or scabbard. The rare to find original frog is the standard German leather example in excellent condition. It has the correct belt loop & locket slot. All leather & stitching are clean & intact. A very rare bayonet, one of the scarcest & most desirable of WW1 German Bayonets complete with original scabbard & rare to find frog.
