Description

Walther LGU Master .177 calibre, serial number BU002052. Beech stock. An early example of this gun. There seems to be very few of these coming up for sale as second hand guns. Blueing is in excellent condition. The woodwork is in very good condition, with very few visible marks. See the attached pictures to verify this, if you can actually see the marks. It has the two stage trigger. The internal condition is excellent. The quality and accuracy of this model is considerably underestimated. The earlier versions of this gun, of which this is one, were notable for main spring issues, due to the gun being sprung to shoot 16 joule power, but still only having the 2.8mm diameter transfer port of the European 7.5 joule model.

On acquiring this gun, I initially shot fewer than 10 pellets through it before I decided it needed work on it before shooting it again. I dismantled it, was very impressed by the standard of manufacture and finish and enlarged the transfer port to 3.1 mm diameter. I then thoroughly cleaned the barrel, followed by polishing the bore, then completely cleaned the internals and re-lubricated with Rocol moly paste. I did not need to de-burr any internal sharp edges as there were none, (as I have had to do with all 4 HW 97’s that I have owned). After shortening the spring to get it down to 11 to 11.25 ft.pds. energy, the gun was a completely different, greatly improved shooting experience. The only thing that now spoilt the gun was the abnormally long first stage and a creeping second stage on the trigger. Looking on the internet, many people had commented on this and nearly as many commented that they found it difficult to set the trigger to their liking. I successfully adjusted the trigger exactly to my requirements by removing the trigger from the gun, removing the upper half of the trigger so that I could see the trigger working and more importantly see how each adjusting screw worked. The trigger was then adjusted within minutes. It is now a very effective trigger. Is it as good as a Record trigger? Probably not, but it is now very close in terms of ‘feel’ and second stage release.

Since then, I have done other work on the gun: I have modified the internals of the moderator, to make the gun quieter, I fitted Tin Bum top and bottom guides, Eventually the original spring was replaced with a Titan XS spring and Tin Bum top and bottom custom guides fitted.

It is presently shooting at 11 to 11.3ft.pds., using RWS 8.4 grn pellets, (I use these to check muzzle velocity because they are cheaper than JSB or Air Arms pellets). It seems to prefer JSB Exact Express pellets.

I have 4 springers, this LGU, a TX 200 rifle (not carbine) and 2 HW97’s. I am selling them all as I have arthritis in my left hand so cocking them is now quite painful. I hope to replace them with a Steyr PCP. I can now only shoot my existing HW PCP. All of my springers shoot equally accurately. I have done work on them all. I would not let anyone else work on my guns, then if I miss, it is my fault….

How well does it shoot?.....

This LGU has shot .22 short shell cases at 50 yards, averaging about 8 cases to 12 to 16 shots. It has shot consistent 3 shot groups covered by an half inch diameter circle at 50 yards. It has consistently shot yogurt pots measuring 95mm by 43mm at 100 yards. My best result with this gun has been shooting 9 twelve gauge shotgun shell cases with 11 shots (I missed number 7 twice) at 100 yards.

All the above were shot in a disused railway tunnel, so there was no wind…

I can no longer shoot the .22 shell cases, or the shotgun shells consistently, as I now shake more and can see less…My reticule is not illuminated and is very fine lined, making it hard to see in good light, that is now my only excuse for missing….it is certainly not the gun's fault.

If you decide to buy, you can collect from Anglesey, North Wales, (and try it in the loft, before you buy it), or I can post it at your cost.
