The Bayonet was the standard Infantry bayonet for the M1871 Mauser Rifle (see page 113&116 of white & Watts ‘The Bayonet Book’). It has a ribbed brass hilt with birds head pommel and push button catch with steel flat spring and steel cross guard with muzzle ring and swept quillon. It has a clean 18 ½” fullered steel blade with single edge. The ricasso has a partially visible maker’s mark ‘***esberg (most likely weyersberg) **stamm Solingen’. The ricasso is also numbered ‘894’. The cross guard is numbered ‘4398’ on one side and Regiment marked ‘8.R.10.198’ on the reverse. The bayonet is complete with its original brass mounted leather Scabbard. The throat mount with frog bar is Regiment marked ‘94.R.4.242’ with other struck out Regiment numbers. All leather and stitching of the scabbard are intact. Sn 11213:3
