Create my profile now!The Corps of Royal Engineers, usually called the Royal Engineers (RE), and commonly known as the Sappers, is the engineering arm of the British Army. It provides military engineering and other technical support to the British Armed Forces and is headed by the Chief Royal Engineer. The Corps Headquarters and the Royal School of Military Engineering are in Chatham in Kent, England. The corps is divided into several regiments, barracked at various places in the United Kingdom and around the world. This excellent badge bears the makers mark ‘Gaunt of London’ (J R Gaunt & Son established in Birmingham in 1884 by James Richard Gaunt and son Charles Frederick Gaunt (both previously employed by Firmin & Sons); specialised in manufacturing military and uniform buttons; 1899 incorporated as limited company; opened London offices in 1905; after first world war bought up a number of button and insignia makers, including Jennens & Co Ltd of London in 1925; became part of Firmin group in 1991.
