Create my profile now!Steer & Webster were listed after 1845 as a merchant and maker of fine scissors, shears, razors, and table knives at Castle Hill, with an office in London. The partners were William Steer, who lived in Wilton Place, London; and Thomas Biggin Webster, Queen Street, Sheffield. In 1851, however, their partnership was dissolved. William Steer apparently retired. During the Victorian era many London & Sheffield cutlers targeted the rapidly expanding market of the American Wild West. This is an attractive, small Victorian English made cutlery handled spear point Bowie knife by Steer & Webster easily concealable and in the form carried by Wild West gamblers for self protection in the lawless saloons of frontier towns. The knife has a typical Victorian era cast German Silver, cutlery form handle decorated with stylised foliate design. The hilt has an oval German Silver finger guard. The 5” long, steel spear point Bowie blade has just light staining consistent with age. One side of the blade has a blued & etched panel with motto ‘Never Draw Me Without Reason Or Sheath Me Without Honour’. The blade shank is crisply marked by the maker ‘Steer & Webster’ and with key trademark. The knife measures 9 ¼” overall. The original brown open top leather scabbard has a German Silver throat mount with locket and chape. Both sides of the leather have gold line decoration. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20551
