More than three quarters of a century ago, in the skies over what are now Afghanistan and Pakistan, Royal Air Force flyers began carrying documents written in languages of the area promising to reward native peoples for the safe return of airman who were forced down amongst them. The descendants of those documents, known as ‘Blood Chits’ are routinely carried by both British and American air crews on operations worldwide.
