This is a Japanese Uchi Gatana with ancient blade. The sword has been examined by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg and a copy of his assessment notes accompany the sword. In extracts of his notes he states “Uchigatana Single Handed Sword Circa 1550 -1620’s period un-signed. Mas had an amateur polish showing straight temperline with small uneven irregularities, very fine hamon edge pattern of nioi mixed with nie crystals. The grain looks coarse & open like you get on Bizen made blades. One large kizu folding flaw. Saya original Honoki wood with its horn Kuri kata for sago cord. Now covered in leather for 2nd World War service, good condition overall. Tsuba old iron round shape & dished either side brown patina with old rust. 2 Hitsu ana (piercings). Traces of lacquer covering? Circa 1700-1750. Tsuka hilt looks munition quality with plain iron fuchi kashira & flat coarse binding Circa 1870’s possible rebellion use. An ancient blade taken to WW2”. In his illustrations of the blade he describes the cutting edge of blade as just under 55 cms. Total length 68.5 cms.
