When the modernizing Belgian Army required a new service rifle all their own, they turned to the existing and proven German designs, bypassing any lengthy, and untimely costly, indigenous initiative in the process. The German design served as the basic framework for the Belgian offering which was slightly modified to suit Belgian military requirements. It was this rifle that turned out to be the very first successful firearm to be produced in number by Fabrique Nationale.
The top of the barrel reads “ANC.ETAB TS PIEPER HERSTAL” and is stamped with a pair of Belgian inspector marks on the left-hand side of the barrel.
The barrel is serial-numbered 805K, as is the receiver.
The magazine plate and stock are serial-numbered 5514.
The bolt is serial numbered 2335.
All major components bear inspector proof marks.
~ Condition ~
The rifle cocks and dry fires. The metalwork developed a nice patina and the woodwork is very clean considering its age and use. The cleaning rod is missing. The ladder sight moves freely.
~ Dimensions ~
The barrel is 22.5 inches (57 cm) long and the overall length of the rifle is 43.5 inches (110 cm).
It weighs 3.8 kg.
