RARE, British 1886 Dated 2nd Pattern .402” E-M Enfield-Martini Bayonet Converted to a Pattern 1887 Mark 1 Bayonet. - BAYO 422 Bayonets

This rare bayonet was originally the 2nd Model Pattern 1886 bayonet made in 1886 for the .402 Enfield-Martini rifle that started its trials in 1882. The .402 model rifle was never adopted into service and they were all converted to take the standard .450 Martini Henry rifle cartridge, designated as the Mark IV Martini Henry rifle with a longer extractor, different breach profile and other alterations. This is an original 2nd Model Pattern 1886 bayonet made in 1886 for the .402 Enfield-Martini rifle which was converted in 1891 to a Pattern 1887 Mark 1 Bayonet for use on the .450” Martini Henry rifles. The bayonet is stamped on the ricasso with the Queens crown over /86 (Date of manufacture) and C’ 91 (Converted in 1891). On the other side of the ricasso is a crowfoot over WD X (bend test) an Enfield inspection stamp and a struck out mark which would have struck out the mark EM (Enfield Martini). The tang is stamped with C and an Enfield inspection stamp. The bayonet also carries the number 2390 on the cross guard. The bayonet is contained in its brass and leather scabbard.
